Beyond the Frame: Reflections on Art in Community

A publication of works by Bellarmine Honors Art in Community Students

As a class, Honors Art In Community focused on critically analyzing the intersection of art and community. Socially engaged art - in contrast to traditional and aesthetically-oriented art - aims to encourage critical reflection around social issues to promote civic engagement and societal change. Throughout the course, students review and analyze socially engaged projects on a local and global scale. This publication synthesizes critiques and reviews of various socially engaged artists, artist led organizations, and their most notable projects. Examining art as a vehicle for social change, students aim to spark critical reflection and community dialogue concerning the role and effectiveness of art in community.
